The first thing everyone does in Destin is stop mid-sentence at the top of the beach walkover. The water genuinely is that color — a layered emerald-to-turquoise you usually only see in filtered photos. The secret is the sand: nearly pure Appalachian quartz, ground fine over millennia, reflecting sunlight back up through shallow, plankton-rich water.
Pick your stretch of sand
Henderson Beach State Park is the local favorite — 6,000 feet of protected shoreline, dunes on one side and emerald water on the other, with pavilions and rinse-off showers. For something quieter, the June White Decker and Shirah Street public accesses on Scenic 98 rarely fill up. Arrive before 9am in summer for parking anywhere; by 11 the lots are a lottery.
Time it right
Mornings bring glassy water perfect for swimming and paddleboarding; an afternoon sea breeze kicks up small surf the kids will love. Check the flag system before you swim — green means calm, purple means marine life spotted — and stay for sunset. On a clear evening the whole beach turns gold, and it’s a five-minute walk back to your own pool at Sandtrap.
