Crab Island isn’t an island at all — it’s a submerged sandbar just north of the Destin Bridge where the water sits waist-deep and pool-clear. On summer weekends hundreds of boats anchor up, floating tiki bars sell shaved ice, and the whole thing turns into Destin’s favorite day out on the water.
Getting there
Rent a pontoon from one of the harbor marinas — half-day rentals start around $250 and most captains-optional outfits will have you piloting after a ten-minute lesson. No boat? Shuttle boats run from HarborWalk every hour in season, and kayaks or paddleboards can make the crossing from the Norriego Point side on calm mornings.
Make a day of it
Go on a weekday if you can — the sandbar is mellow and the water clearest before the afternoon boat traffic. Bring water shoes, a cooler and more sunscreen than you think you need; there’s no shade out there. Back at the dock by four, you’re twenty minutes from a waterfall spa and a grill at the house.
