An afternoon on South Congress

South Congress Avenue runs straight at the Texas State Capitol, and the view down the street — shopfronts in the foreground, dome and skyline stacked behind — is the picture most people mean when they say Austin. The avenue itself is the city’s front porch: vintage stores, boot shops, food trucks and buskers, all within a mile you’ll want to walk slowly.

The essential stops

Allens Boots has fitted cowboy boots to locals and film stars since 1977 — trying on a pair is free and dangerous. Uncommon Objects is a cabinet of curiosities the size of a supermarket; the candy counter at Big Top and the costume racks at Lucy in Disguise fill in the gaps. Around the corner on Annie Street, the “i love you so much” mural has a polite queue most afternoons.

Time it right

Come late afternoon: shop the racks while the light softens, grab a cortado or a cocktail on one of the rooftop patios, and watch the Capitol dome go gold at sunset up the avenue. First Thursdays the whole street stays open late with music spilling out of the stores — and you’re a five-minute drive from Parker Lane when your feet give out.
