If you've ever wondered why Destin calls itself the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village," October is the month to find out. The 78th Annual Destin Fishing Rodeo runs from October 1 to October 31, 2026, turning Destin Harbor into a month-long celebration of fishing, competition and Gulf Coast culture.

You don't need to own a rod to enjoy it. Here's everything visitors should know — plus how to plan a base just a short drive away in Miramar Beach.

What Is the Destin Fishing Rodeo?

Established in 1948, the Rodeo started as a local fishing competition and has grown into one of the Gulf Coast's best-known fishing events. Throughout October, anglers aboard registered private and charter boats compete for daily, weekly and overall awards across many species and divisions.

The Rodeo traditionally kicks off with the Destin Seafood Festival on the harbor boardwalk. In 2026 that festival took place September 25–27, so the fishing action is already underway as October begins.

Rodeo Dates and Weigh-In Times

  • Dates: October 1–31, 2026
  • Where: Destin Harbor (116 Harbor Blvd, Destin)
  • Public weigh-ins: Daily, roughly 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the docks behind AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar. Spectating is free.

Always confirm times on the official Rodeo website before you go, as schedules can change with weather and fishing conditions.

How to Enjoy the Rodeo (Even If You Don't Fish)

  1. Watch a weigh-in. Afternoon weigh-ins are when boats return with their biggest catches, and the dock gets lively.
  2. Walk the harbor. HarborWalk Village and the Destin Harbor Boardwalk are right there for dinner, drinks and sunset views.
  3. Book a charter. October offers comfortable temperatures, and many charter captains run half-day and full-day trips.
  4. Eat local. Gulf shrimp, grouper, snapper and oysters are on menus all over the harbor.

Tip: Parking near the harbor fills up quickly on busy afternoons. Arrive early or plan to be dropped off.

Where to Stay: A Beach House in Miramar Beach

Destin Harbor is about 10–12 miles (roughly 20–25 minutes by car) from our homes in Miramar Beach, a good distance for a quiet base that is still close to the action. After a day on the water, you can come back to a short walk to the sand and your own private pool.

White Sand – Gulf-view home sleeping up to 12 guests, heated private pool, and a 1–2 minute walk to the beach. Ideal for a group of anglers and families. → View White Sand

Golden Sand – Sleeps up to 20 guests, with a private pool and hot tub, game room, and beach access in about a minute with no roads to cross. Ideal for big fishing crews or multi-family trips. → View Golden Sand

Pool heating is available in the cooler months (October–April); ask for current availability when you book.

Planning Checklist for October in Destin

  • Bring layers: October days are warm, evenings can be cooler by the water.
  • Reserve dinner at popular harbor restaurants early on weekends.
  • Check the official Rodeo site for weigh-in times, rules and any special events.
  • Book your house early. Fall is one of the most relaxed seasons on the Emerald Coast and one of the best values of the year.
