Swimming holes: Barton Springs & the Greenbelt

When Texas summer hits triple digits, Austin gets in the water. The centerpiece is Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Park — three acres of clear, spring-fed water that holds 68 to 70 degrees no matter what the thermometer says. Locals swim laps at sunrise, students nap on the grassy banks all afternoon, and on Thursday evenings it stays open late for swims under the stars.

Into the Greenbelt

Downstream, the Barton Creek Greenbelt threads twelve miles of limestone canyon through the middle of the city. After good rain, swimming holes like Twin Falls, Sculpture Falls and Campbell’s Hole fill deep and green — each a short scramble from a trailhead, each feeling far wilder than a city address should allow.

Know before you go

The creek runs seasonal: check flow levels before hiking in expecting to swim. Wear real shoes for the limestone, pack out everything, and go on a weekday morning to have the falls nearly to yourself. Back at Parker Lane, the outdoor shower and shaded patio finish the day properly.
