Go fish: a day with the luckiest fleet

Destin’s “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” slogan isn’t just bravado — it’s geography. The hundred-fathom curve swings closer to shore here than almost anywhere else on the Gulf, which means deep water and the big fish that live in it are a short run from the harbor instead of a half-day steam. That accident of the sea floor built the largest charter fleet in Florida, and it’s why first-timers so often come home with a cooler they can barely lift.

Pick your trip

Four-hour bay and inshore trips are perfect with kids — calm water, constant action from ladyfish and Spanish mackerel. Six- to eight-hour Gulf trips chase red snapper (season peaks in June and July), grouper, king mackerel and amberjack. The twelve-hour deep drops are for the committed: tuna, and a real shot at billfish. Book a week ahead in summer, and ask the deckhand what’s actually biting — they’ll tell you straight.

After the catch

The fleet comes home around four, the catch goes up on the rack for photos, and then the best part: half the restaurants on the harbor will cook your fish for you — blackened, grilled and fried, sides included. Thirty pounds of snapper feeds the whole house back on Sandtrap, and the freezer bags they send you home with take care of tomorrow.
