The Emerald Coast hides a second coastline behind the beach one: a string of championship golf courses threaded through the pines and bayous, close to a dozen of them within twenty minutes of the houses. Mild winters mean the season never really closes — locals will tell you February, with the crowds gone and the greens quick, is the best-kept secret of the year.

Where to play

Kelly Plantation runs along the Choctawhatchee Bay with water views on half the holes; Regatta Bay is tight, tactical and gorgeous; Indian Bayou’s 27 holes are the friendliest walk for mixed-skill groups. Ten minutes east, the Sandestin resort packs four courses of its own — Burnt Pine is the trophy round, worth booking the moment your dates are set.

Tee-time tips

Play early: mornings are windless and ten degrees cooler, and you’re back at the pool by two. Twilight rates after 2pm can halve the green fee if you’d rather chase the sunset. Every club rents quality sets, so leave yours at home — and yes, the house really is on Sandtrap Road. Consider the name a warning about the local bunkers.
